- smooth, light colored, worsted-weight wool yarn (about 375 yards, if you wish to complete the drawstring bag); US size 7 (4.5 mm) needles, or size needed to obtain gauge of 20 sts = 4" (10 cm) measured over stockinette; cable needle (some loaners will be available in class); clip-on stitch markers

- Cast on 38 sts, leaving a 24" (60 cm) tail. Work 5 rows of garter st. Do not break yarn.
