Remember the stealth knitting project that I mentioned before Stitches South? It finally went off into the mail early last week, giving me time to turn to another, long-neglected project: the Dye Dreams socks. I’m happy to report significant progress in a week’s time.

You can see that I decided to go with the fold-over cuff idea, with Little Waves on the cuff and Rivulets flowing below on the instep. Twisted rib on the back of the leg gives a nice, snug fit. The toe is as yet undecided, though – rather than a plain, standard wedge toe, I’m toying with something that might resemble pebbles on a beach, in keeping with the socks’ theme.
You know what else is undecided? The name for this sock design. I’m considering Yachats, after a town on the Oregon coast. I did a lot of the socks’ initial swatching and planning while DH (Da Hubster) and I were there last March, celebrating our anniversary. We stayed in a cute, 4-unit motel overlooking the bay where the Yachats river runs into the Pacific. As the tide recedes and the river meanders across a wide bed of sand, incredible patterns are formed in the sand. It’s too much fun to wander around at low tide, admiring the sinuous shapes as they repeat and morph from one spot to the next. They’re all the more stunning because you know they’re transient, doomed to disappear as the tide returns.
The only catch is that I suspect no-one outside Oregon would know how to pronounce “Yachats.” What’s your guess?
Tagged: WIP.
two syllables: yach-ats. first syllable sounds like yacht with the "t" sounding like a "k." second syllable sounds like "aaah" with a "ts" on the end. accent on the first syllable.
though I have a few other equally plausible guesses.

I forgot to say: pretty socks!!

sheesh, I'm in Oregon (albeit a newbie Oregonian), and I don't know how to pronounce it.
» Janel
Karen: Close, but not quite! Good guess, though.
Janel: It took a long time before DH and I found out how to pronounce Yachats, Siuslaw, Philomath, and The Dalles properly. It’s almost as if these names were created specifically so that the locals could identify the newbies and visitors...

Beautiful sock, fine design and color choice, and excellent photo too. Too beautiful to wear - it's a work of art. Have you considered an exhibition? I hope you will name it Yachats - it would be a unique name to go with a unique sock. Yachats is pronounced locally as 'YAh-hots' with the accent on YAh. Residents are usually Yachatians (like Haitians with a Yaaa stuck on the front), or if it makes it easier, just think of (at least some of) us as Yah-HOTTIES!

And “YAh-hots” is the winner! And thanks for the Yachatians/Yah-hotties explanation... I’d heard of Yah-hotties before, but I think Yachatians is pretty cool too.
I think the design’s name is going to have to be Yachats. So the pattern will have to include a pronunciation guide. So what?

Yup. YAH-hots, which some of us who are not Oregonians know . . . BUT this is also somebody who knows how to pronounce Puyallup (WA) and Des Plaines (IL), and is certifiably weird about words.
I wouldn't trust that most people would have a clue. Good to include a pronunciation guide. It's a great name.

Deb, I figure that, if nothing else, Yachats will make for a good name because a search for it on Ravelry currently turns up empty. :-)
