Hexipuff #2

By | November 25, 2011

As suspected, knitting from the center out gave me exactly the kind of hexipuff I wanted: Vital stats: Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock mediumweight and 3.25 mm needles (again, as with hexipuff #1). Pinhole start, kfb increases, k2tog decreases, and pinhole finish. Working 6 increases on 2 of every 3 rounds gave the […]

No rest for the process knitter

By | November 21, 2011

As promised, a hexipuff photo: Here are the vital stats: Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock mediumweight, using 3.25 mm needles. Started with Judy’s Magic Cast-on, increased via paired M1L and M1R, decreased via paired k2tog and ssk, and finished with grafting. You can see it’s a little short and squat, no doubt a […]

Translating

By | November 20, 2011

I’m pleased to report that my last Nuna swatch has finally finished drying, and it measures 23½ sts per 4". I figure that’s close enough to the target of 24: if my Swirl turns out a tad larger than intended, so be it. Now all that stands in the way of diving into the Swirl […]

Confession

By | November 19, 2011

After fulfilling my MDKR on my shawl today, what did I do? A. Keep going on the shawl. B. Start winding skeins for my next Swirl. C. Make progress on any other WIP. D. None of the above. Yup, you guessed it: D, none of the above. Instead of turning my attention to any WIP, […]

Asking for it

By | November 18, 2011

Speaking of never having enough yarn or time to play with it, look what came in the mail yesterday: Yup, it’s a bag of Mirasol Nuna, destined to become a Swirl. I’ve done enough swatching to know that its blend of wool, silk, and bamboo has just the right balance of bounce, drape, and sheen. […]

More swatching required

By | November 13, 2011

Blocking my Swirl swatches revealed something odd. Going Green calls for 24 stitches per 4" using 3.75 mm needles. With the Mirasol Nuna swatch, using 3.75 mm needles gave me 22 stitches per 4". Going down to 3.5 mm needles for the String Theory Selku swatch got me a little closer: 23 stitches per 4". […]

sigh

By | November 11, 2011

The Estonian shawl remains at the top of my knitting basket, but I’m still finding bits of time here and there to swatch for my next Swirl. So far, the swatching has been fun mindless knitting, a nice counterpoint to paying close attention to the Estonian lace. Here’s the rub: it seems I’m not quite […]

It better be worth it

By | October 4, 2011

Lately I’ve been enthralled by Estonian lace. I’m not sure what got me off on this kick, but I do know what’s fueled it along: Taking in the Knitted Lace of Estonia exhibit at Lacis – not in person, unfortunately, but virtually through its stunning slideshow. Don’t you just love how the photos show a […]

Swatch therapy

By | August 15, 2011

The swatch therapy continues. The Merino Silk Lace from indigodragonfly blocked out beautifully: What you can’t really see in the photo is how the yarn glows. Or the wonderful way it feels—too decadent! Arguably, though, I should’ve used smaller needles, maybe 3 mm. At 3.5 mm, the fabric is a wee bit too airy. I […]

Thanks

By | August 11, 2011

I’ve had two weeks to think about it, and I’m just as certain as ever of two things: Sock Summit 2011 was a smashing success, and I was an utter idiot for agreeing to teach during every class session. Don’t get me wrong; the classes were great fun. I’m honored I had the chance to […]
